If you perform a percutaneous tracheostomy, in addition to documenting your procedure in the notes (technique, tube type and size), please complete a ‘tracheostomy passport’.  The product sticker that comes with the tube should go on the passport.

The tracheostomy passport is designed to follow the patient through the hospital and provide at-a-glance information on their tube.  It is also used for product traceability (and has provided invaluable information in the past when defective tubes were an issue).  If you perform a tracheostomy tube change, please ensure you update the passport.

The default tracheostomy tube used on the unit is the Tracoe Twist Plus.  Consider inserting a tube with a subglottic suction port unless absolutely sure it won’t be necessary.  We also stock Tracoe Twist and variable flange tubes.  If you are inserting anything other than a Twist Plus, please document the rationale for your choice in the notes, and ensure there is a plentiful supply of inner tubes before proceeding.
